The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie
It is the 1930s. Miss Jean Brodie, a teacher at the Marcia Blaine School for Girls, gathers her girls around her, picks her favorites and tells them they are the “crème de la crème”.  Being their teacher, she is tasked with educating them in history and literature, but instead instructs them of life, or so she thinks.

Along the way, her students fall under the spell Miss Brodie casts as she educates them about worldly ideas. Miss Brodie opens their eyes regarding the arts, literature and politics.  She exposes them to adult thoughts and opinions through a radical and untethered approach to the world.  They soak up her teaching with eager zeal and energy.

Miss Brodie is having an affair with a fellow instructor, the music teacher, which her students become aware of.  At the same time, Jean is holding a torch for another instructor, the arts teacher, who loves her but knows it will never work. Jean’s girls write a letter to the music teacher signing Jean’s name. The head mistress of the school discovers the letter and tries to dismiss Jean. But Jean threatens to sue and the matter is dropped.

At the end of the school year, the girls move up to their next year, but not without having learned major lessons about life, love and the world. They understand what it means to live against the grain of expectations, take your own choices in hand, and live a life that is all your own.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a play based on Muriel Sparks' 1961 novel, ranked my Modern Library in the top 100 best books of the best English Language books of the twentieth century. It was turned into a film starring Maggie Smith in 1969, who won an academy award for her performance.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie will presented as part of Rhinebeck Theatre Society's 2018 Season of Women.
